Community colleges are the open door to higher education for 4 out of 5 young Americans. For most, the price of attending a community college is not only affordable, but also the deal of a lifetime. Students receive high quality instruction that leads to either a significant increase in wages or access to some of the most prestigious universities in the country. For too many students, however, even the affordable option of a community college can be an overwhelming financial obstacle.
That is where the gift of a scholarship can change the trajectory of a life. The MiraCosta College Foundation’s vision is to ensure that no one is denied access to higher education because of financial need. Our immediate aim is to build a $1.5 million endowment to ensure that generations of students can reach for and achieve a college education.
MiraCosta College, together with its foundation, launched and completed phase one of the Campaign for Opportunity Scholarships this past academic year. Generous donors made gifts totaling $500,000, which will be used as matching funds to expand scholarship endowments by $1.5 million.
The campaign is now in phase two and ready to match new gifts for endowed scholarships on a 2-to-1 basis. For example, a gift of $16,500 will be matched by the foundation with $8,500—enabling the donor to establish a full $25,000 endowed scholarship.*
How will $1.5 million in new scholarship endowments benefit students? In the first year alone, the new endowments will generate 60, $1,000 scholarships—helping 60 students achieve their educational goals.
*Please note: We recognize that our match is slightly in favor of the donor. We have established these numbers to encourage the creation of $25,000 scholarships, which will generate a full $1,000 annual scholarship.
All gifts for new endowed scholarships to support students with financial need will be matched on a 2-to-1 basis. In other words, for every two dollars donated, the foundation will match that gift with one dollar.
You can make a gift of any amount to our general endowed Opportunity Scholarships Fund and that gift will be matched on a 2-to-1 basis.
Consider establishing a scholarship with matching funds specifically designated for nursing or horticulture.
You can also set up a named, endowed scholarship, for example:
Endowments are gifts that just keep on giving. Over 50 years, based on conservative estimates, the funds will have paid out more than $3 million in scholarships to 3,000 students and the principal of the endowed funds will be valued at about $3.8 million.
