Alma Flores

Alma Flores is a successful business executive whose love of learning comes from her time as a student at MiraCosta College. Her initial career goal was to become a counselor at the college, but she instead went into the human resources field when she was offered a job after she graduated from UC San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. More than 20 years later, she now works as Senior Director of Human Resources at HM Electronics, a Carlsbad-based company with close to 1,000 employees in offices around the world.

Flores was a first-generation college student, one of five children of Mexican immigrants, when she started at MiraCosta College in 1997. She praised the instructors and counselors who fostered her love of learning.

It ignited a passionate search for knowledge and the courage to envision a future without limits.   Thanks to my EOPS Counselors' unwavering faith in me—even in moments of self-doubt – I have been able to learn, grow and succeed. Let their belief in me be a lesson to other students at Mira Costa College: Dare to dream without boundaries and pursue that vision until it becomes your truth."

She has continued her education with a master’s degree in business administration from California State University, San Marcos.

As a foundation board member, Flores wants to encourage more students to attend MiraCosta College and remove the stigma sometimes attached to community college. She hopes that her story will be an inspiration to students considering MiraCosta College.
